Post-Doctoral Position on Data Integration: The Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia (CTFC) is offering a post-doctoral position for a researcher to contribute to the TABMON project, a cutting-edge initiative in acoustic bird monitoring in Europe. The candidate will work in collaboration with the Catalan Ornithological Institute (ICO) and international monitoring networks under the European Bird Census Council (EBCC). The role focuses on integrating acoustic bird monitoring data into EU-wide platforms and developing workflows for biodiversity analysis.

Post-Doctoral Position on Acoustic Bird Monitoring and Data Integration

Designation: Post-Doctoral Researcher

Research Area: Bioacoustics, Biodiversity Monitoring, Ecological Modeling, Data Science

Location: Solsona, Spain (with partial teleworking possibilities)

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in Ecology, Conservation Biology, Bioacoustics, Computational Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Strong interdisciplinary foundation in ecology, data management, and technology.
  • Proven experience in biodiversity monitoring and familiarity with acoustic monitoring techniques.
  • Experience with sound-based monitoring tools such as BirdNET, Kaleidoscope, or AI-based models.
  • Proficiency in handling large-scale ecological datasets and statistical modeling.
  • Knowledge of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) and frameworks.
  • Desirable: Programming skills in Python, R, experience with AI/ML pipelines, and expertise in field deployment of autonomous recording units.

Job Description:

  • Develop and standardize protocols for integrating acoustic bird monitoring data into EU-wide platforms.
  • Design and implement workflows to harmonize acoustic and traditional monitoring datasets.
  • Lead the creation of EBV showcases to demonstrate how acoustic data enhances monitoring of species distribution, abundance, and migration phenology.
  • Collaborate with partners and stakeholders for device monitoring, workflow refinement, and reporting standards.
  • Coordinate workshops, meetings, and act as CTFC’s liaison for project alignment.
  • Publish high-quality scientific outputs and contribute to policy reports.

Terms of Appointment:

  • Start Date: January-February 2025
  • Contract Duration: 2 years (Temporary, Fixed-term)
  • Working Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week)
  • Salary: Based on skills and experience
