Postdoctoral Position in Structural Studies of Mitochondrial DNA Replication at University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Postdoc Research Position in Sweden, University of Gothenburg

Summary

The University of Gothenburg is offering a postdoctoral position focused on the structural studies of mitochondrial DNA replication. This role is part of a Wallenberg Scholar-funded research project within the Institute of Biomedicine. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team to elucidate the molecular mechanisms governing mitochondrial DNA replication and gene expression, particularly how defects contribute to human disease, using advanced structural biology techniques like cryo-EM.

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

Structural studies of mitochondrial DNA replication

Subject Area Description

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication is crucial for maintaining mtDNA integrity and stability, which in turn ensures normal mitochondrial function and cellular energy production. Dysregulation in this process can lead to mtDNA depletion or deletions, resulting in mitochondrial diseases. This project aims to unravel the molecular mechanisms controlling human mtDNA replication by combining structural biology, in vitro biochemistry, and cell biology. A key focus will be on the structural and functional analysis of protein complexes involved in mtDNA replication and understanding the impact of disease-associated mutations on these processes.

Location

Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification

General Eligibility

  • Doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctoral degree.
  • Degree completed no more than three years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions for special grounds (e.g., parental leave, illness) may apply.

Assessment Criteria (Required)

  • Doctoral degree in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Documented experience in structural studies of proteins or macromolecular complexes using cryo-electron microscopy.
  • Experience in protein purification and protein biochemistry.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Assessment Criteria (Meritorious)

  • Experience in single-particle cryo-EM, including sample preparation, grid optimization, data processing, and structural analysis.
  • Experience in structural studies of protein-DNA complexes.
  • Knowledge of mitochondrial systems.
  • Experience in cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression, cell culture, and in vitro biochemical analyses.

Personal Qualities

  • Highly motivated researcher with strong scientific curiosity.
  • Ability to independently plan, carry out, and analyze research.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills for collaboration within and outside the research group.

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct structural and functional studies of protein and protein-DNA complexes involved in mitochondrial DNA replication. Key responsibilities include:

  • Determining structures of replication complexes using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).
  • Preparing and biochemically characterizing protein complexes.
  • Performing cryo-EM sample preparation and grid optimization.
  • Processing and structurally analyzing cryo-EM data.
  • Combining structural findings with in vitro biochemical analyses to test mechanistic models.
  • Investigating how disease-associated mutations affect the function of the replication machinery.
  • Driving the project independently while collaborating closely with team members and collaborators.

The employment is full-time and temporary, for two years with a possibility of a one-year extension.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment portal by clicking the “Apply” button. The application must be complete and received by the final deadline.

Required Application Documents
