Postdoctoral Research Associate (Gumpper Lab), University of North Carolina, USA

Post-Doctoral Fellowship Position at USA, Ozbolat Laboratory at Penn State

Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a highly motivated and independent Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Gumpper Lab within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. This full-time temporary position focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), particularly in the context of psychedelics, to develop novel therapeutic compounds for pain relief and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Designation

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Research Area

The research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), with a primary emphasis on the 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors, especially concerning psychedelics. The lab utilizes state-of-the-art technologies including:

  • Molecular Pharmacology and Chemical Biology: Quantifying downstream signaling pathways and interaction partners related to GPCR activation, characterizing psychedelic polypharmacology, and developing novel compounds.
  • Structural Biology: Using cryo-electron microscopy to reveal molecular interactions between drugs and receptors for structure-based drug design.
  • In Silico Approaches: Employing computational methods (MD simulations, docking, AI/ML) to gain mechanistic insights into ligand-receptor dynamics.

Location

Chapel Hill, NC, USA

Eligibility/Qualification

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • PhD

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Proficient in protein expression and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).
  • Experience with molecular cloning and PCR.
  • Working with mammalian cell culture is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Highly motivated, independent, and creative scientist with demonstrated experience in protein purification and structure determination by cryo-EM.
  • Strong track record of solving challenging structural biology problems.
  • Ability to design, execute, and interpret experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Intellectually curious, collaborative, and eager to contribute to an interdisciplinary research environment spanning molecular pharmacology, structural biology, and computational biophysics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, scientific rigor, and enthusiasm for using mechanistic insights to advance the discovery of novel therapeutic compounds and molecular probes.

Job Description

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to projects aimed at understanding how GPCRs lead to different biological outcomes, with a specific focus on psychedelic compounds and their impact on serotonin, dopamine, and adrenergic receptor systems. The role involves utilizing advanced techniques in molecular pharmacology, structural biology (cryo-EM), and computational biophysics to investigate receptor-ligand interactions and develop novel therapeutic approaches for chronic pain, neuropsychiatric disorders, and substance use disorders.
