Summary
The Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mathematical Modelling of Batteries. This 41-month fixed-term position, funded by the Faraday Institution, involves fundamental research in asymptotics, homogenisation, and numerics to develop and analyze models of coupled electrochemistry, mechanics, and heat flow in batteries. The successful candidate will join a combined Oxford team and collaborate with researchers across the Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling Project and industrial partners.
Designation
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Research Area
- Mathematical Modelling of Batteries
- Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling (MSM) Project
- Asymptotics, Homogenisation, and Numerics in battery modelling
- Modelling thermo-chemo-mechanical degradation in batteries
Location
Andrew Wiles Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG, UK
Eligibility/Qualification
The job description for this role was not provided in the source content, but typically for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, candidates are expected to hold a relevant PhD (or be very close to completion) in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field, with a strong background in mathematical modelling and numerical methods. Experience in battery modelling or related areas would be highly advantageous.
Job Description
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will undertake research within the Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling Project (MSM) of the Faraday Institution. Key responsibilities include:
- Carrying out fundamental research in asymptotics, homogenisation, and numerics.
- Developing, analysing, and solving models of coupled electrochemistry, mechanics, and heat flow that determine battery behaviour.
- Focusing on modelling thermo-chemo-mechanical degradation.
- Working as part of a combined Oxford team involving mathematics and engineering.
- Interacting with researchers across the wider Multi-Scale Mathematical Modeling Project and with industrial collaborators.
- Contributing to research publications and presenting results at conferences and meetings.
- Opportunities to contribute a small amount of teaching (at most three hours a week during academic terms).
