Eligibility/Qualification
- Ph.D. or nearing completion in a natural science discipline (e.g., geography, environmental science, physics, or similar).
- Demonstrated track record of effectively communicating research results.
- Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python).
- Very good English communication skills (working language).
- Experience or training in Earth system modeling is highly desirable but not essential.
Job Description
The postdoctoral researcher will:
- Conduct innovative research on land-based CDR methods such as afforestation, forestry, and bioenergy.
- Assess land-based methods alongside ocean-based approaches regarding their CO2 uptake potential and effects on climate and ecosystems.
- Focus on climate dynamics in overshoot scenarios and Earth system feedbacks affecting CDR efficiency.
- Develop and modify the ICON/MPI Earth System Model (ESM) and its land surface component JSBACH.
- Set up, execute, and analyze ESM simulations for various CDR portfolios.
- Engage in interdisciplinary discussions to assess CDR methods.
- Lead the analysis and writing of publications.
- Contribute to strengthening the intellectual atmosphere of the Department.
