Postdoctoral Researcher in Atomistic Modelling, Ghent University, Belgium

Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Ghent University, Belgium

Postdoctoral Researcher in Atomistic Modelling: The Rogge group at Ghent University is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to engage in cutting-edge computational research aimed at designing functional materials. This role involves developing a general stress control algorithm for predicting phase transitions and stability in materials under various anisotropic stress stimuli.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Atomistic Modelling of Anisotropic Stresses on Functional Materials

Designation: Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area: Atomistic Modelling, Functional Materials Design, Molecular Dynamics, Computational Chemistry

Location: Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry, chemical physics, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, theoretical physics, or a related field obtained before the first working day at the CMM.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing software for atomic modelling (Python, C, etc.).
  • Experience in using quantum chemistry or force-field-based software (e.g., Gaussian, VASP, CP2K, LAMMPS, OpenMM).
  • Strong knowledge of statistical physics and thermodynamics.
  • Excellent research and scientific writing skills.
  • Proactive working style and ability to work independently.
  • Strong motivation to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient in written and oral English communication.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will:

  • Establish and implement a general stress control algorithm compatible with existing molecular dynamics codes.
  • Predict phase transitions and phase stability in functional materials in response to anisotropic stress.
  • Contribute to an ERC Starting Grant project focused on strain engineering concepts in material design.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and engage with national and international academic partners.
  • Participate in presenting research outcomes at conferences and potentially involve research stays in prominent international research teams.

How to Apply:
Interested candidates should prepare and submit the following documents:

  1. Completed application form (see the provided template).
  2. A one-page cover letter explaining your interest and fit for the position.
  3. Curriculum Vitae.
  4. Copies of your Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. diplomas and transcripts, merged into one PDF.

Documents should be saved as four separate PDFs named as follows:
Application_STRAINSWITCH_PostDoc_[YourName]_[FileNumber1-4AsListedAbove].

All documents must be sent in one email to Sven.Rogge@UGent.be, with the subject line: “Application STRAINSWITCH YourName”.

Last Date to Apply: The position will remain open until filled, with interviews conducted on a rolling basis. Applications should ideally be submitted as soon as possible, preferably by September 2025.
