Postdoc in Netherlands

Postdoctoral Researcher in Biogeochemical Modelling: The Department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to contribute to the PHOSFLUX project, which investigates the impact of ocean acidification on the marine phosphorus cycle through a (bio)geochemical modelling approach.

Postdoctoral Researcher in (Ocean) Biogeochemical Modelling

Designation

Postdoctoral Researcher

Research Area

Ocean Biogeochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Modelling of Marine Nutrient Cycles

Location

Utrecht University, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht, The Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A completed PhD in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biology, or a related field by the time the position starts.
  • Experience and affinity with biogeochemistry and marine research.
  • Proficiency in numerical modelling of mineral-water interactions and/or organic matter degradation processes.
  • Strong interest or experience in synchrotron-based analysis techniques is preferred.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Job Description

As a postdoctoral researcher within the PHOSFLUX project, you will:

  • Model phosphorus dynamics in sinking and deposited marine snow in relation to changing environmental conditions in the water column.
  • Create reactive-transport models for phosphorus dynamics including processes such as CaCO3 dissolution, organic matter decomposition, and adsorption/incorporation of PO4 into solid phases of marine snow.
  • Test the performance of your model by simulating experimental and field data in collaboration with the PHOSFLUX PhD candidate.
  • Participate in fieldwork in the North Atlantic Ocean and laboratory experiments and collaborate closely within a multidisciplinary research team.
