Summary
The University of Gothenburg invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary team at the Institute of Biomedicine. This position, funded by a Wallenberg Scholar grant, focuses on structural and functional studies of the protein machinery that replicates human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The successful candidate will combine cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biochemical assays and cell biology to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying mtDNA replication and how defects contribute to human disease.
Postdoctoral Researcher — Structural Studies of Mitochondrial DNA Replication
Designation
Postdoctoral Researcher
Research Area
Structural studies of mitochondrial DNA replication
Work will focus on determining structures of replication complexes and integrating structural data with in vitro biochemistry to define mechanism and disease impact.
Location
Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden
Eligibility / Qualification
- Doctoral degree (PhD, or equivalent) in structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related field. The degree must be completed before the employment decision.
- In the first instance, applicants who defended their PhD within three years prior to the end of the application period will be considered. Exceptions may be made for documented special grounds (e.g. parental leave, illness, relevant service).
- Excellent spoken and written English.
Assessment Criteria and Desired Experience
- Documented experience with structural studies of proteins or macromolecular complexes using cryo-EM is required.
- Strong background in protein purification and protein biochemistry.
- Expertise in single-particle cryo-EM—including sample preparation, grid optimization, data processing and structural analysis—is particularly meritorious.
- Experience with protein–DNA complexes, cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression, cell culture and in vitro biochemical assays is advantageous.
- Ability to plan and carry out independent research, strong teamwork and communication skills, and scientific curiosity.
Job Description
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for carrying out structural and functional studies of proteins and protein–DNA complexes involved in human mitochondrial DNA replication. Key tasks include:
- Preparation and biochemical characterization of replication protein complexes.
- Cryo-EM sample preparation, grid optimization and data collection workflows.
- Processing cryo-EM data and performing structural analysis to determine architectures of replication assemblies.
- Combining structural results with in vitro biochemical assays to test mechanistic models and evaluate the effects of disease-associated mutations.
- Independently driving aspects of the project while collaborating closely with group members and external partners.
Employment terms: Full-time, temporary appointment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. Placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. Start date as agreed.
