Research Area & Location
- Research Area: Environmental Molecular Virology, focusing on the development and application of environmental monitoring approaches (e.g., wastewater-based epidemiology) to track avian influenza virus ecology and other zoonotic viral threats.
- Location: Primarily based in the School of Biological Sciences and the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast.
Job Description
The successful candidate will work within the group of Dr. Connor Bamford, in collaboration with Prof. John McGrath and Dr. Deirdre Gilpin. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and applying novel environmental monitoring techniques to track avian influenza.
- Collaborating within an interdisciplinary network (including AFBI, UCD, Teagasc, and the Northern Ireland Avian Influenza Forum).
- Expanding existing research on wastewater-based epidemiology from local to island-wide scales.
Eligibility / Qualifications
Essential Criteria:
- Hold (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Molecular Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Ecology, or a related field.
- Significant, recent, and relevant research experience in molecular virology/microbiology techniques (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCR).
- A well-developed understanding of relevant Health and Safety procedures and COSHH regulations.
- A clear interest in interdisciplinary research.
