Research Plant Physiologist: The Justin McGrath Research Lab at the United States Department of Agriculture, Urbana, IL, is seeking a Research Plant Physiologist (Research Associate) to develop a comprehensive nitrogen allocation model for soybean seeds. The role involves incorporating biochemical details into the existing model, identifying specific reactions and genes to enhance soybean nitrogen concentration. The candidate will validate the model using experimental data and contribute to the improvement of soybean value through accelerated breeding.
Research Plant Physiologist (Research Associate) – Nitrogen Allocation Model for Soybean
Designation: Research Plant Physiologist (Research Associate)
Research Area: Nitrogen Allocation Model for Soybean Seeds
Location: Justin McGrath Research Lab, USDA-ARS Global Change and Photosynthesis Research Unit, Urbana, IL, United States
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Ph.D. in a science-related field (Biology, Genetics, Crop Sciences, Physics, Chemistry)
- Minimum 4 years of research experience
- Knowledge of mathematical modeling (ordinary differential equation systems) and programming
- Experience in analyzing results and writing manuscripts
- Familiarity with plant physiology, particularly N metabolism and field experimentation
- Must be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident
Job Description:
- Develop a comprehensive nitrogen allocation model for soybean seeds
- Incorporate biochemical details into the existing model, focusing on nitrogen reallocation from leaves to seeds and transport in vascular tissues
- Validate the model using experimental data from the Energy Farm SpiderCam facility and greenhouse experiments
- Collaborate with fieldwork teams to design and execute relevant experiments
- Contribute to the improvement of soybean value through accelerated breeding
- Make the model public and lay the foundation for further research on protein quality and genetics
