Scholarship Opportunity in Flood Modeling: This is an exciting invitation for applications to three fully funded graduate student positions in flood modeling, aimed at tackling the challenges posed by flooding in Canada. These positions are part of the Open-FRANC initiative, which seeks to develop an open-source flood modeling ecosystem.
Designation
- MSc Position: Mapping/Modeling of Open Water Floods and Ice Jam Hazards
- PhD Position 1: Hydraulic Modeling of Open Water and Ice Jam Floods
- PhD Position 2: Integration of Hydrological and Hydraulic Models
| Position | Research Area | Supervisors | Funding Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSc | Mapping/Modeling of Open Water Floods and Ice Jams | Dr. Jennifer Nafziger, Dr. Yuntong She | Fully Funded |
| PhD 1 | Hydraulic Modeling of Open Water and Ice Jam Floods | Dr. Jennifer Nafziger, Dr. Yuntong She | Fully Funded |
| PhD 2 | Integration of Hydrological and Hydraulic Models | Dr. Hongli Liu | Fully Funded |
Research Area
- Open water flooding
- Ice jam hazards
- Hydraulic modeling
- Hydrological modeling
- Flood mapping
Location
- Collaborative initiative among six leading Canadian universities.
Eligibility/Qualification
- MSc Position: Open to applicants with a relevant background in hydrology, hydraulics, and process-based modeling.
- PhD Positions: Must hold (or be completing) a Master’s degree. Direct applications from Bachelor’s graduates are not eligible.
Additional Notes:
- International applicants must meet English proficiency standards.
- Diversity is encouraged in applications.
Description
Floods represent one of the most significant natural disasters in Canada, necessitating a collaborative approach to flood risk analysis. The Open-FRANC project aims to unify floodplain modeling capabilities across the country while developing predictive tools and scenario-based hazard products.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should send the following materials:
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate transcripts (unofficial copies acceptable)
- A brief document outlining:
- Interest in the positions
- Experience with hydraulic modeling, hydrologic modeling, and flood mapping, if any.
Email Submission:
- For MSc and PhD Position 1: Dr. Jennifer Nafziger (jnafzige@ualberta.ca)
- For PhD Position 2: Dr. Hongli Liu (hongli.liu@ualberta.ca)
Subject Line Format:
