TUS Presidents Doctoral Scholarship -Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland

Postdoc in Ireland

TUS Presidents Doctoral Scholarship: The TUS Presidents Doctoral Scholarship offers a fully funded PhD opportunity in the study of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production enhancement. This project aims to detect PHA-producing strains, optimize production conditions using plastic-related substrates, and explore the introduction of antimicrobial agents. The research also includes an examination of the mechanical characteristics of the produced materials, culture conditions, plastic-related monomers, and green extraction methods. The goal is to meet the production and isolation needs for the packaging and biomedical sectors while minimizing environmental impact.

Scholarship Description:

TUS Presidents Doctoral Scholarship – Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) Production Enhancement

The project’s overall objective is to detect polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)-producing strains from an existing microbial collection and optimize production conditions using plastic-related substrates. Additionally, the project explores the introduction of antimicrobial agents to expand the potential applications of the produced materials. Mechanical characteristics will be examined and compared. The research includes evaluating culture conditions, different types of plastic-related monomers, optimization and fermenter scale-up of the process, and the assessment of green extraction methods for the recovery of PHAs. The final goal is to find the proper conditions that will allow production and isolation needs for the packaging and/or biomedical sector, while minimizing environmental impact.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in microbiology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, material sciences, or related disciplines. A strong academic background is required, along with advanced written and oral English skills. For English proficiency, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no component score less than 6.0 is necessary.

Required Documents: Applicants are required to submit a completed application form, which can be downloaded from the provided link.

How to Apply: To apply for the TUS Presidents Doctoral Scholarship, download the application form from the following link: Application Form. Submit your completed application to proPtus.ie, referencing the Project Title in all correspondence.

Last Date: The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 5pm on 31 October 2023. Don’t miss this opportunity to further your research career in PHA production enhancement. Apply now!
