PhD Position – Organ-Organ Interactions: The University of Twente, Applied Stem Cell Technologies group, invites applications for a full-time PhD position to explore organ-organ interactions on chip. This position offers a unique opportunity to delve into the molecular nature of innervation-driven organ-organ interaction using stem cell-based organ-on-chip technology. The research aims to study physiological signaling, drug responses, and interactions in a well-regulated manner, providing insights into microenvironmental conditions. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the BIOS Lab-on-a-Chip group at the University of Twente.
Designation: PhD Position
Research Area: Organ-Organ Interactions on Chip
Location: University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands
Eligibility/Qualification:
- MSc degree in (stem cell) biology, neurobiology, or associated field.
- In-depth expertise in (stem) cell biology and biochemistry.
- Affinity with microfluidic chip design and fabrication.
- Experience with differentiation protocols for creating organoid cultures.
- Proficiency in English (IELTS test results minimum score 6.5 or TOEFL iBT minimum score 90 if required).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.
Job Description:
PhD Position – Organ-Organ Interactions on Chip
- Use human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids and innervating structures on a microfluidic chip to investigate organ-organ interactions.
- Select relevant organs and employ differentiation procedures to create organoids.
- Culture organoids in microfluidic devices, validate identity, maturation stage, and functional activity using biomarkers, imaging, and electrophysiological read-outs.
- Assist in creating microfluidic devices for innervation, optimizing their design based on physiological relevance and anatomical orientation.
- Validate functional innervation of target organs and investigate the regulatory role of innervation on organ-organ interaction using integrated sensors.
