Doctoral Researcher – Diversity Interactions: The DFG-funded International Research Training Group GRK 2324 “TreeDì” seeks a Doctoral Researcher for the project “Modelling Generalized Diversity Interactions” (P9G-3). This part-time position, based at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig in Leipzig, is available for 3 years, commencing on June 1, 2024.

Research Area: Modelling Generalized Diversity Interactions in Chinese Subtropical Forests

Location: German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig, Leipzig

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed scientific University degree (Diploma/ M.Sc.) in biology, ecology, physics, or a similar discipline.
  • Knowledge of ecological theory.
  • Strong quantitative and statistical skills in R, with the ability to create simple programming structures.
  • Experience in modeling ecological systems or ecological networks is desirable.
  • Fluency in English (writing and speaking).
  • Motivation for proactive teamwork in an international research consortium.
  • Flexibility, good organizational skills, and a hands-on mentality.
  • Willingness to spend substantial time (approx. 2-4 months per year) in China for fieldwork, lab visits, and courses.
  • Willingness to work under subtropical field conditions.

Job Description:

Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) – Modelling Generalized Diversity Interactions

The doctoral researcher will:

  • Study a large dataset of tree-tree interaction networks.
  • Analyze the dependence of tree-tree interaction strengths on environmental conditions.
  • Integrate tree interaction networks into models of complex food webs.
  • Collaborate with Chinese counterparts and contribute to a Joint German-Chinese PhD Advisory Committee.
  • Submit a cumulative thesis comprising at least three chapters in the form of first-author papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
