PhD Position in Light Diffusion: Explore the world of anomalous light diffusion in Pierre Soulages’ stained glass windows! This PhD position offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intriguing properties of Conques Abbey Church’s stained glass windows, one of Pierre Soulages’ latest masterpieces. The project focuses on unraveling the physical mechanisms behind the peculiar light diffusion in these windows, combining theoretical and experimental approaches.
PhD Position in Theoretical and Experimental Study of Anomalous Light Diffusion
Designation: PhD Candidate
Research Area: Theoretical and Experimental Study of Anomalous Light Diffusion in Soulages’ Stained Glass Windows
Location: Charles Fabry Laboratory (LCF) in Palaiseau, Institute of Light and Matter (iLM) in Lyon, and Hubert Curien Laboratory in Saint-Etienne (France).
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Solid knowledge in optics and electromagnetism.
- Programming experience (preferably with MATLAB, Python, C++).
- Experience in optical experiments.
- Ability to take initiatives and work autonomously.
- Good writing and communication skills.
- At least B2 level in English.
Job Description: The PhD candidate will conduct optical measurements on real pieces of Soulages’ glass windows and develop a numerical code using the Monte-Carlo method for light transport. Additionally, they will create a theoretical model based on radiative transfer theory to analyze experimental measurements. The research will be directed by Prof. Jean-Jacques Greffet at the Charles Fabry Laboratory (LCF) and co-directed by Dr. Kevin Vynck at the Institute of Light and Matter (iLM). Experimental measurements will be performed at the Hubert Curien Laboratory in Saint-Etienne. The candidate will be registered at Université Paris-Saclay.
How to Apply: Interested candidates should send their application, including a CV, cover letter, and contact information for references, to Prof. Jean-Jacques Greffet at jean-jacques.greffet@institutoptique.fr and Dr. Kevin Vynck at kevin.vynck@univ-lyon1.fr.
