NWO-Funded PhD Position: The Faculty of Science at Utrecht University is offering a fully-funded PhD position as part of the NWO-funded project ‘Identifying Plant Compounds and Processes that Attract and Accommodate Beneficial Microbes’ (ATTACC). The project aims to unravel the role of plant compounds and processes in attracting and accommodating beneficial microbes, with a focus on the root rhizosphere environment.

NWO-Funded PhD Position: Plant-Microbiome Signalling

Study Area: Plant and Microbe Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or related fields.

Location: Utrecht University, Faculty of Science, Utrecht, Netherlands.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • MSc in Plant and/or Microbe Biology, Plant Biotechnology, or related science field.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Experience in plant biotechnology or microbiology techniques, preferably in plant microbiome research.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Interest in becoming skilled in bioinformatic analysis of large ‘omics data sets.
  • Programming skills for bioinformatic analysis is an advantage.

Description: The PhD candidate will work on the ATTACC project, focusing on identifying and characterizing plant components that control the root rhizosphere environment. The project utilizes transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants expressing MYBs linked to exudation. The candidate will conduct wet-lab experiments, collaborate with data scientists for bioinformatics analyses, and contribute to teaching BSc and MSc students. The position offers a unique opportunity to steer the project creatively and make significant contributions to sustainable agriculture.
