Ph.D. Student – Translational Immunology: The Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student in Translational Immunology for a three-year position starting from May 1, 2024. The successful candidate will join the Sawitzki lab to investigate the molecular mechanisms of immune cell activation and regulation, focusing on understanding severe immunopathologies in diseases like COVID-19 breakthrough infections. The candidate will work on preparing patient samples, conducting bioinformatic analyses, and designing mechanistic in vitro experiments.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biology, Immunology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Medical Biology, or related field.
  • Strong academic background and dedication to translational research, especially in immune-mediated diseases.
  • Interest and/or expertise in working with cell biological systems.
  • Prior experience with multi-parameter (flow) cytometry, single-cell RNAseq, computational biology, or data analysis of multiplex datasets is highly desirable.
  • Scientific curiosity, self-driven, and motivation to perform scientifically rigorous experimental work.
  • Appreciation for interdisciplinary work and proactive drive to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Project and data management skills.
  • Experience in scientific writing, fluent in English (written and spoken).

Job Description:

  • Prepare patient samples from blood or tissue for Deep Single-Cell Profiling Studies.
  • Conduct bioinformatic analyses and evaluate high multiparametric flow cytometry and scRNAseq datasets.
  • Design and implement supporting mechanistic in vitro experiments.
  • Collaborate with national partners exploring swarm learning methods for decentralized data analysis.
