PhD: Machine Learning, University of Bergen, Norway

Postdoc in Norway

PhD: Machine Learning: Embark on a transformative journey in climate research with a PhD position at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway. The position, affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), focuses on regional climate modeling using machine learning. This opportunity is part of the EU Horizon Europe project Impetus for Change (I4C), addressing the improvement of climate predictions at local to regional scales.

PhD: Development and Application of Machine Learning for Downscaling Climate Predictions/Projections

Location: Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in atmospheric sciences, statistics, computer science, applied mathematics, or related disciplines
  • Experience in atmospheric physics, climate dynamics, statistical modeling
  • Proficiency in scientific programming using Python, R, Matlab, Julia, C/C++ or similar
  • Advantageous: Experience with machine learning, climate models (regional or global), and climate data analysis
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Good English skills (written and oral)

Description: The PhD position is associated with the I4C project and World Climate Research Program’s CORDEX initiative. The focus is on applying machine learning to develop efficient emulators for high-resolution regional climate models, improving the quality and transferability of emulators across different global climate models and time scales. The goal is to generate computationally lightweight algorithms capable of translating coarse resolution climate predictions or projections into reliable regional and local information.

Work Tasks:

  1. Research methods for improving emulator quality and transferability.
  2. Test the transferability of an existing machine learning emulator to tropical conditions.
  3. Disseminate research findings to the research community and the public.
  4. Collaborate with other project members on climate predictions and km-scale regional downscaling.

How to Apply:

  1. Visit Jobbnorge for the online application portal.
  2. Upload required documents, including a brief account of research interests and motivation, CV, transcripts, diplomas, certificates/references, and a list of scientific works/publications.

Last Date for Apply: The application deadline is 30th April 2024.

About the PhD Position:

  • The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years, with a possibility of a 4th year.
  • The 4th year may include 25% compulsory work (e.g., teaching duties).
  • Employment period may be reduced for candidates with prior qualifying post-employment.
  • Successful candidates must participate in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within 3 years.

We Offer:

  • A stimulating working environment.
  • Salary as a PhD research fellow in the state salary scale.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Good welfare benefits.
