PhD Scholarship: Designing Novel Monte Carlo Algorithms

Location: Radboud University, Netherlands

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Research University Degree in computer science, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, or a related discipline.
  • Strong interest in foundational algorithmics and computational complexity research.
  • Proficiency in mathematical knowledge and programming skills, demonstrated through previous research projects.
  • Familiarity with Linux and preferably experience in programming low-level languages such as C/C++ and assembly language, or low-level hardware design like VHDL.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills, with a good command of the English language.
  • Demonstrated ability in interdisciplinary collaboration, as evidenced in previous academic or professional experiences.
  • Knowledge of or experience in Bayesian networks and approximate Bayesian inference is appreciated.

Description: As a PhD candidate in this position, you will be responsible for developing and analyzing Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms utilizing novel technology available in specialist labs. Leveraging photonic manipulation, you will explore the computational potential of synchronized stochasticity for approximate Bayesian inference, focusing on energy, time, and space efficiency. Your responsibilities will include algorithm development, implementation, simulation, and theoretical analysis using the mathematical framework of randomised complexity theory. Additionally, you will collaborate with the Probabilistic Graphical Models Group at the Donders Centre for Cognition and contribute to academic teaching and research activities within the institute.
