Postdoctoral Researcher: Biomineralization Mechanisms: The Department of Microstructure Physics and Alloy Design at the Max-Planck-Institute for Sustainable Materials in Düsseldorf, Germany invites applications for a POSTDOC F/M/D – UNDERSTANDING BIOMINERALIZATION MECHANISMS USING ATOM PROBE TOMOGRAPHY (APT).

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Doctoral degree in structural biology, palaeontology, materials science or related fields
  • Strong background in biomineralization and structural characterization
  • Experience in understanding biomineralization mechanisms or experimental work related to SEM, FIB preparation, and TEM
  • Knowledge and experience of atom probe tomography (APT) desirable
  • Good English skills

Job Description:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Preparation of specimens for microstructural investigations
  • Microstructural characterization using electron microscopy techniques such as SEM/FIB and TEM combined with spectroscopy methods
  • Measurement of mechanical properties
  • Sample preparation for APT analysis using focused ion beam milling (FIB)
  • High resolution structural and chemical analysis using APT
  • Interpretation of results from a biological perspective and integration of results from different methods
  • Establishment, management, and coordination of collaborations
  • Writing funding proposals and publishing scientific results in international journals
