PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein, Umeå University, Sweden

Postdoc Position (2 years) 2019 in Sweden, Umeå University

PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein: Umeå University invites applications for a PhD student position in Medical Science, focused on understanding mitochondrial protein quality control (PQC) during ageing. This 4-year position, based in the lab of Dr. Andreas Kohler within the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, offers an innovative and collaborative environment, access to cutting-edge resources, and opportunities for career development.

PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control During Ageing

Designation:
PhD Student

Research Area:
Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control, Ageing, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry

Location:
Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umeå University, Sweden

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Strong interest in mitochondrial biochemistry, PQC, molecular mechanisms, and ageing biology.
  • Background in protein biochemistry, molecular biology, or cell biology, with hands-on lab experience.
  • Proficiency in protein biochemistry methods (e.g., immunoblotting, protein purification), mitochondrial biology techniques (e.g., mitochondria isolation, respiratory chain analysis), and experience with PQC/proteostasis.
  • Knowledge of molecular cloning, genetic engineering, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and experience with Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system are advantageous.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills for an inclusive, collaborative research setting.

Job Description:
The selected candidate will join Dr. Andreas Kohler’s lab to explore PQC mechanisms in mitochondria, aiming to understand their role in cellular health and ageing. Research will focus on using Saccharomyces cerevisiae to elucidate how mitochondrially-encoded proteins are maintained through PQC during health and disease. This role offers dedicated mentorship, technical resources, and opportunities for scientific innovation.
