Grants-in-Aid: Physical Sciences: The AIP’s Grants-in-Aid program supports research in the history of the physical sciences, catering to graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and well-established scholars. The grants aim to develop a community of researchers and facilitate their access to necessary resources.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Students: Graduate and undergraduate students must provide a letter of reference from their thesis adviser.
  • Postdoctoral Researchers/Independent Writers: Should have a record of publication in the field.
  • Established Scholars and Non-Professional Historians: Are also eligible for supplemental research funds.

Job Description

The Grants-in-Aid program is designed to support research activities by providing funds for:

  • Travel to archives
  • Oral histories
  • Research assistance
  • Other reasonable research costs

Grants are paid on a reimbursement basis, with a maximum grant value of $3,000 (USD) for general research and up to $6,000 for oral histories involving individuals in industrial settings.

Successful applicants are expected to submit a short report upon completion of the grant work and may receive promotion in AIP’s publications.

  • Letter of reference from thesis adviser (for students)
  • Record of publication (for post-PhD or independent writers)
  • A two-page letter describing the research and activities the grant will support
  • Appendix listing archives/collections to be consulted or interviewees
  • A brief budget showing requested expenses

Last Date to Apply

April 15 and November 15 of each year
