PhD Position in Co-Transcriptional Splicing, University of Cambridge, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

Summary

The Suyang Zhang Lab at the LMB offers a fully funded PhD position aiming to explore the molecular architecture of co-transcriptional splicing complexes using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and biochemical methods. The project seeks to uncover how RNA transcription and splicing are coordinated in human cells.

PhD Position in Cryo-EM and Mechanistic Analysis of Co-Transcriptional Splicing, University of Cambridge, UK

Designation

PhD Student – Research in Molecular Biology and Structural Biology

FieldDetails
Research AreaMolecular Biology, Structural Biology
LocationLaboratory of Molecular Biology, University of Cambridge
FundingFully funded
Start DateOctober 2026

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field expected by September 2026.
  • Strong interest in molecular biology and structural biology.
  • Prior lab experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, or structural biology is desirable but not required.
  • Open to international applicants.

Description

This PhD project focuses on the essential coordination between transcription and pre-mRNA splicing in eukaryotic cells. The student will investigate the structure and function of large co-transcriptional splicing supercomplexes and dissect the mechanisms that facilitate gene expression. The project will incorporate biochemical, structural, and cellular methods and provide training in:

  • Cryo-electron microscopy
  • Mammalian cell biology, including CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing
  • In vitro reconstitution of large protein-RNA macromolecular complexes
  • Biochemical and biophysical assays

The lab emphasizes collaboration and provides access to advanced facilities in cryo-EM, biophysics, and mass spectrometry.
