PhD Opportunity: One-Way Transparent Liquid Crystal Polymer Films, (TU/e) Netherlands

Postdoc in Netherlands

Are you passionate about cutting-edge materials science and optical engineering? Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry for an exciting project on next-generation optical interfaces.

PhD Opportunity: One-Way Transparent Liquid Crystal Polymer Films, (TU/e) Netherlands

Summary

This project, titled “TactVision: The Liquid Crystal Polymer Invisibility Cloak,” focuses on developing advanced, one-way transparent optical films. These films are essential for modern technologies like augmented reality (AR) glasses and smart displays, allowing information to be visible to the user while remaining hidden from outside observers.

Position Overview

FeatureDetails
DesignationPhD Candidate
Research AreaLiquid Crystal Polymer Technology & Optics
LocationEindhoven, Netherlands
Last Date to ApplyJuly 30, 2026

Research Area & Goals

You will work in the group of Dr. Danqing Liu to develop cholesteric liquid crystal polymer coatings. The goal is to create thin, robust films capable of:

  • Selectively reflecting red, green, and blue (RGB) light.
  • Controlling light directionality for privacy-preserving displays.
  • Maintaining high transparency from the observer’s side.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Candidates should hold a Masterโ€™s degree in one of the following fields:

  • Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Liquid Crystals, or Soft Matter
  • Optics or Photonics
  • Coating Technology

Additional assets include experience with liquid crystal materials, photopolymerization, cleanroom fabrication, or thin-film processing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and formulate cholesteric liquid crystal polymer systems.
  • Fabricate thin optical coatings using techniques such as spin coating, blade coating, and photopolymerization.
  • Optimize optical performance (transparency, polarization selectivity, color fidelity).
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and industrial partners.
  • Publish research findings and develop teaching skills.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online via the official application portal. Your application package should include:

  1. Cover Letter: Describing your motivation and qualifications.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Including a list of publications and contact details for three references.
