📍 Location
The doctoral position is based at the Solna Campus of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. The research group is affiliated with the Data Driven Life Sciences (DDLS) programme and SciLifeLab.
🎓 Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s/second-cycle degree or equivalent qualification, or meet the equivalent doctoral-education eligibility requirements.
- Have completed at least 240 higher-education credits, including at least 60 credits at Master’s/advanced level, where applicable.
- Demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to Swedish English B/English 6.
- Have a relevant academic background in areas such as bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, computer science, image/signal processing, medicine, software engineering, statistics, or related fields.
- Possess basic knowledge of ML/AI and good programming skills in at least one programming language.
- Demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English.
Desirable: Experience with digital pathology, whole-slide images, Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow/OpenCV/MATLAB, high-performance computing, databases, pathology/oncology, scientific writing, and interdisciplinary research will strengthen an application.
📚 Scholarship Description
The selected doctoral student will work on AI-driven analysis of digital pathology data, particularly for prostate cancer. Research will include evaluating and developing state-of-the-art AI and foundation models for diagnosis, grading and prognosis, as well as developing emerging AI solutions—including agentic AI systems—to support clinical histopathology workflows.
The project combines large-scale image processing, deep learning, multimodal analytics, molecular information and clinical variables to advance accurate, scalable and cost-effective precision medicine.
The doctoral student will receive an employment-based doctoral studentship with a contractual monthly salary, access to doctoral courses and research training, an individual research project, international collaboration opportunities, and access to KI’s research environment and facilities.
