The University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Dr. Laszlo Farkas’s Pulmonary Hypertension Laboratory. The successful candidate will investigate the molecular and immunological mechanisms underlying pulmonary arterial hypertension using animal models, human cell-based systems, and advanced molecular techniques. Career development and mentoring toward becoming an independent principal investigator will be provided.

Research Area
The laboratory studies pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary vascular disease, with emphasis on molecular and immunological mechanisms. Research areas include:
- Endosomal dysfunction and RAB7 deficiency
- Functions of the RNA-binding protein CSDE1 and related protein interactions
- Pulmonary vascular remodeling and dysfunction
- Inflammatory and immune signaling pathways
- Interferon-regulated gene expression and immune-cell dynamics
- Mouse and rat models of pulmonary vascular disease
- Human endothelial, smooth muscle, fibroblast, and immune-cell systems
- Bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, proteomics, secretomics, and bioinformatics

Eligibility and Qualifications
Minimum qualification: Applicants must hold a PhD, MD, or combined PhD/MD in Biological Sciences, Medicine, or another relevant field.
Candidates with expertise in cardiovascular or pulmonary biology and experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques are encouraged to apply.

- Experience with AI models
- Bioinformatics and omics analysis
- Flow cytometry and cell sorting
- Cell culture and confocal microscopy
- Management of mouse colonies
- Mouse and rat disease models
- In vivo cardiopulmonary physiology assessment and analysis
- Experimental design, statistical analysis, and data interpretation
- Grant writing and manuscript preparation
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Job Description
- Perform independent research under the direction of the principal investigator.
- Design, implement, and manage independent and collaborative projects focused on pulmonary hypertension.
- Conduct mouse studies involving animal handling, chronic hypoxia/SU5416 exposure, physiological assessments, and tissue collection.
- Conduct in vitro studies using endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, and immune-cell models.
- Perform gene knockdown, BrdU proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis assays.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, including bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing and proteomic datasets.
- Investigate inflammatory pathways, interferon-regulated genes, and immune-cell dynamics.
- Maintain mouse colonies, laboratory records, research data, and statistical analyses.
- Prepare grant proposals and assist with securing research funding.
- Write or contribute to peer-reviewed articles, books, and book chapters.
- Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and help manage purchases, budgets, and biosafety requirements.
- Organize laboratory procedures and coordinate with facilities and research-infrastructure providers.
