Scholarship Description

Are you interested in atomically thin materials and eager to explore how twisting and stacking atomic layers can trigger unconventional photovoltaic effects beyond conventional p–n junctions? At DTU Electro, the selected PhD candidate will fabricate artificial quantum materials by assembling two-dimensional (2D) crystals into twisted van der Waals heterostructures.

The successful applicant will work within the Novo Nordisk Foundation NERD project Quantum Interfaces, joining a dynamic and collaborative team of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers specializing in materials growth, nanoscale fabrication, advanced spectroscopy, and optoelectronic device physics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exfoliate atomically thin 2D crystals and fabricate twisted van der Waals heterostructures via deterministic dry transfer.
  • Characterize crystal orientation, stacking order, and twist angle using optical and nonlinear optical tools, including second-harmonic generation (SHG).
  • Fabricate micro- and nanoscale optoelectronic devices in advanced cleanroom facilities.
  • Investigate photovoltaic phenomena in twisted 2D structures using spatially resolved, wavelength-dependent, and polarization-dependent photocurrent measurements.
  • Co-supervise BSc and MSc student projects and present research findings in top scientific journals and international conferences.

Research Area

The position is situated at the intersection of quantum physics, nanotechnology, nonlinear optics, and photovoltaic device physics, focusing specifically on:

  • Twisted van der Waals heterostructures and moiré engineering
  • Novel non-centrosymmetric light-matter interactions and shift currents
  • Deterministic assembly and transfer of 2D layered materials
  • Optoelectronic device fabrication and advanced electrical characterization

Location

The position is based at the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering (DTU Electro), located at DTU’s main campus in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark (just north of Copenhagen).

Eligibility and Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Degree Requirement: Must hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) or equivalent in Physics, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or a related discipline. (Candidates completing their Master’s degree soon may apply, but must graduate before starting the position).
  • Technical Competencies: Demonstrated interest or prior experience in 2D materials, optical spectroscopy, photovoltaic physics, electrical transport measurements, semiconductor physics, or cleanroom micro-/nanofabrication will be considered a significant advantage.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are required.

Salary and Working Conditions

The appointment will be made in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and the Danish Ministry of Taxation. DTU offers competitive salaries, comprehensive healthcare coverage, pension contributions, and a collaborative, supportive work environment.

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the DTU recruitment portal. All required documents must be written in English and consolidated into one single PDF file, including:

  • A cover letter detailing your motivation for this specific PhD project and your relevant background
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Grade transcripts and official BSc/MSc diplomas (with an official grading scale explanation)
  • A list of scientific publications (if applicable)
  • A brief letter of interest highlighting research competencies and specific experimental skills

Last Date to Apply

The deadline to submit your application is 30 October at 23:59 (Danish Time). Late submissions will not be considered.
