Research Area

The research sits at the interface of analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, and instrumentation. Applications cover structural characterization, chirality analysis, and fundamental studies of gas-phase ions relevant to chemistry, biology, and pharmaceutical sciences.

Location

Section of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Centre Médical Universitaire, Rue Michel-Servet 1 – CH- 1211 Genève, Switzerland.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Degree Required: A Master’s degree (for PhD applicants) or a PhD degree (for postdoctoral applicants) in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Useful Competencies: Ion optics, simulations, vacuum systems, optics and lasers, instrument control, electronics, mass spectrometry instrumentation, and gas-phase ion chemistry or spectroscopy.
  • Language Requirement: English level B2 or higher.
  • Profile: Highly motivated candidates who enjoy building new things, are scientifically curious and collaborative, and want to make a visible contribution to the field.

Scholarship Description

The ERC-funded CHIRAMASS project aims to develop new analytical approaches for chirality measurements by coupling ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) with gas-phase ion spectroscopy. The goal is to establish innovative instrumentation and methodologies capable of probing the structure and handedness of molecular ions with unprecedented sensitivity and specificity. The candidate will join the Biophysical and Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory to develop and implement instrumentation combining ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, laser-based spectroscopy, and advanced ion manipulation methods.
