Summary
The University of Cambridge is inviting applications for an ERC-funded Research Assistant position within the Materials Theory Group, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. This role is part of the “Quantum Theory of the Periodic Tables Under Extreme Conditions” (QUANTEX) project led by Prof. Stefano Racioppi. The position is designed for motivated individuals interested in theoretical chemistry, condensed matter physics, and computational materials science.
Designation
Research Assistant (Fixed Term)
| Field | Details |
|---|---|
| Institution | University of Cambridge |
| Department | Materials Science and Metallurgy |
| Project Name | QUANTEX (ERC-funded) |
| Duration | 42 Months |
| Location | Cambridge, United Kingdom |
| Start Date | October 1, 2027 |
Research Area
The research focuses on Theoretical Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics, and Computational Materials Science. Specifically, the project investigates how extreme pressure alters electronic structures, chemical bonding, and the properties of elements and compounds to develop a theoretical framework for chemical periodicities under compression.
Location
Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, UK.
Eligibility/Qualification
- Academic Requirement: Applicants should hold (or expect to be awarded) a good UK Master’s degree (or overseas equivalent) in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics.
- Program Enrollment: Candidates must meet the University’s academic and English-language entry requirements for a doctoral programme and be enrolled as a PhD student at Cambridge during the project.
- Skills: A strong interest in theoretical and solid-state chemistry is essential. While previous experience in programming, machine learning, or electronic-structure calculations (DFT) is advantageous, it is not strictly required as training will be provided.
- Personal Attributes: Excellent analytical and communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Scholarship Description
The successful candidate will join the Materials Theory Group and the Lennard-Jones Centre at Cambridge. The role involves performing first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), crystal structure prediction, and machine-learning methods. Research directions include exploring pressure-induced changes in electronegativities and oxidation states, the formation of electride and superconducting states, and machine-learning accelerated materials discovery. The appointee will have access to high-performance computing facilities and collaborate with international theoretical and experimental experts.
How to Apply
The application process involves two mandatory steps:
