Postdoc in Novel Ion-Channel Engineering at Linköping University, Sweden

Study in Sweden

Linköping University (LiU) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in novel ion-channel engineering. This prestigious fellowship, funded by the Högbom-Cocozza Research Foundation, is designed to support early-career researchers in medicine and health. The successful candidate will join the Pantazis group to work on a high-impact project at the intersection of ion-channel biophysics, protein engineering, and cellular excitability.

Position Overview

DesignationPostdoctoral Researcher
Research AreaIon-channel biophysics, Protein Engineering, Cellular Excitability
LocationLinköping University, Sweden
Duration3 years (fixed-term)
SalarySEK 43,000 per month
Application DeadlineNovember 30, 2026

Research Area

The project aims to engineer novel voltage-gated ion channels to provide new methods for tuning cell electrical activity. The research integrates molecular biology, electrophysiology, computational modeling, and in vivo validation. This work has transformative potential for applications in both neurobiology and cardiac electrophysiology.

Eligibility & Qualifications

To be considered for this postdoctoral fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Degree: Must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign degree.
  • Timing: The degree must have been awarded no more than three years before the application deadline (exceptions may be made for medical internships or statutory leave).
  • Institution: The PhD must have been awarded by a higher education institution other than Linköping University.
  • Technical Skills: Strong mechanistic understanding of ion channels and experimental experience in ion-channel biophysics (electrophysiology).
  • Molecular Biology: Practical experience in molecular cloning.
  • Mathematics: Sufficient mathematical skills (basic calculus) to construct and interpret models of ion-channel function.
  • Language: Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.

Meritorious qualifications include experience with protein engineering and a clear ambition to become an independent group leader.

Scholarship Description

This position offers a unique career development path funded by the Högbom-Cocozza Research Foundation:

  • International Experience: The researcher may spend 6–12 months at a higher education institution abroad during the appointment.
  • Research Grant: Before the third year, the postdoc may apply for an independent research grant of approximately SEK 500,000 to establish their own research environment.
  • Duties: Primarily research-focused, with optional teaching duties up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
  • Environment: Based at the Division of Cell and Neurobiology (CNB) within the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV).
