Doctoral Positions (PhD): The Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) invites applications for a Ph.D. scholarship in Translational Immunology. The successful candidate will join the Sawitzki lab to investigate immune cell activation and regulation, focusing on understanding severe immunopathologies in diseases like COVID-19. The position is for three years, starting from May 1, 2024.

Location: BIH @ Charité Campus Mitte Rahel Hirsch Center, Luisenstraße 65, 10117 Berlin.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biology, Immunology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Medical Biology, or a related field.
  • Strong academic background with dedication to translational research, especially in immune-mediated diseases.
  • Interest and/or expertise in working with cell biological systems.
  • Prior experience with multi-parameter (flow) cytometry, single-cell RNAseq, computational biology, or data analysis of multiplex datasets is desirable.
  • Scientific curiosity, self-driven, and motivation for scientifically rigorous experimental work.
  • Appreciation for interdisciplinary work and proactive collaboration across disciplines.
  • Project and data management skills.
  • Experience in scientific writing; fluent in English (written and spoken).

Description: The Ph.D. student will be involved in a project focusing on understanding severe immunopathologies, particularly in the context of COVID-19 breakthrough infections. Responsibilities include preparing patient samples, conducting bioinformatic analyses, and implementing mechanistic in vitro experiments. The candidate will work closely with experienced scientists, receive technical support, and collaborate with national partners using swarm learning methods for data analysis.
