Research Associate-Research Entomologist: The Pollinator Health in Southern Crop Ecosystem Research Unit of the Agricultural Research Service is seeking two postdoctoral researchers in Ecology/Entomology/Biology. This full-time, term appointment, initially for 1 year with possible yearly extension(s), offers the opportunity to work on projects related to pollinator health in intensive agricultural systems in cooperation with multiple stakeholders in Stoneville, MS. The primary focus areas include nutritional ecology, plant-pollinator mutualisms, insect physiology, chemistry, and toxicology. The overarching goal is to improve pollinator health, reduce stressors, and develop ecosystem-level approaches for conserving bee and plant biodiversity sustainably.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in biological sciences or related disciplines.
  • Thorough knowledge of insect behavioral ecology and insect physiology.
  • Strong theoretical and statistical skills, and proficiency in experimental design and data analyses.
  • Supplemental knowledge of molecular techniques (e.g., pollen source identification, bee genotyping) and floral chemistry is desirable.
  • Willingness to work with bees in both lab and field settings and learn beekeeping skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in oral and written communication of research results.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residents who meet certain eligibility requirements may apply.

Job Description: The incumbent will have the flexibility to work on a wide range of topics related to pollinator health, including but not limited to nutritional ecology, plant-pollinator mutualisms, insect physiology, and toxicology. The primary goals are to improve pollinator health (managed honey bees and native bees), reduce the impact of stressors (including pesticides, pests, and pathogens), and develop ecosystem-level approaches to sustain plant-pollinator populations and mutualisms. The work will contribute to conserving bee and plant biodiversity sustainably in the face of large-scale agriculture.
