Eligibility / Qualification
- Degree Level: Incoming first-year, full-time students in PhD, DMA, or MDPhD programs (may also be offered to continuing students).
- Academic Standing: Selection is based on demonstrated academic excellence and outstanding research potential. Funding renewal is subject to satisfactory academic progress.
- Automatic Designates: Recipients of major Tri-Agency awards (Vanier Scholarships, CGSD, CIHR Doctoral Awards, NSERC PGSD, SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships) or other selected major external scholarships automatically qualify as 4YF designates.
Job / Fellowship Description
- Conduct full-time advanced doctoral research and coursework under faculty supervision.
- Maintain academic excellence and satisfactory progress throughout the degree program.
- Adhere to ongoing funding maintenance policies:
- Canadian citizens and permanent residents must apply annually for eligible Tri-Agency funding to maintain 4YF standing.
- International fellows are eligible to apply for annual Affiliated Fellowships (such as the Killam Doctoral Fellowship) to seek higher stipend tiers.
How to Apply
- No Separate Application Required: All applicants who submit an application for admission to a UBC doctoral graduate program (PhD, DMA, MDPhD) are automatically considered.
- Selection Process: Individual graduate programs evaluate incoming applicants, select nominees based on academic merit, and submit recommendations directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
