Eligibility / Qualifications
- A relevant Master’s degree in electrical power engineering, computer science, control engineering, chemistry, managerial economics (with strong quantitative skills), or physics or mathematics with a specialization in operations research. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, with 120 credits obtained at the master’s level. (Master’s students can apply, but the degree must be obtained no later than autumn 2026).
- A strong academic background with an average grade from your Master’s degree corresponding to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale.
- Must meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s Doctoral Programme in Electric Power Engineering.
- Experience with optimization modelling and numerical optimization tools (e.g., JuMP, Pyomo, Gurobi, CPLEX, HiGHS) is considered an important qualification.
- English language skills corresponding to at least level B2 in the CEFR scale.
Scholarship Description
As a PhD candidate hosted in the Electricity Markets and Energy Systems Planning (EMESP) group, you will contribute to the Norwegian Centre on AI for Decisions (AID) by developing trustworthy AI-supported methods for long-term hydropower scheduling. The project focuses on combining established stochastic optimization with AI-based learning to represent the future value of stored water more accurately when hydropower production is nonlinear.
Duties include carrying out high-quality research, participating in EMESP research group activities, completing coursework equivalent to at least 30 ECTS, contributing to publications, and participating in international conferences or research stays.
