Scholarship & Project Description

Climate change and rising ambient temperatures pose significant challenges to animal welfare, productivity, and health in livestock farming. Heat stress in dairy cattle leads to reduced milk yield, compromised reproductive performance, and increased vulnerability to disease.

This PhD research project aims to design, develop, and deploy an intelligent, AI-agent-based control system capable of monitoring barn microclimates, analyzing cow physiological and behavioral responses in real time, and autonomously optimizing mitigation mechanisms (such as fans, misters, and ventilation systems). The candidate will work at the intersection of computer science, engineering, and animal science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and train AI models (machine learning / reinforcement learning) for predictive climate and stress modeling.
  • Integrate IoT sensors, thermal cameras, and automated barn control infrastructure.
  • Conduct field experiments and validation trials in experimental cattle barns.
  • Publish findings in leading international peer-reviewed journals and present at global conferences.
  • Complete required PhD coursework and participate in departmental teaching or dissemination activities.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Applicants must meet the general admission criteria of the Graduate School of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University:

  • Academic Background: A Master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish 2-year Master of Science, 120 ECTS) in Computer Science, Data Science, Agricultural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Technical Skills: Strong programming proficiency (e.g., Python, C++, or R), experience with machine learning/deep learning frameworks, and familiarity with IoT/sensor data processing.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Personal Qualities: Strong analytical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment.

Salary and Employment Terms

The appointment is for a standard period of 3 years. The PhD position provides a competitive monthly salary and pension contribution in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) for academic staff in Denmark.
