Position Overview
The successful candidate will lead a translational research initiative investigating a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an RNA-binding protein involved in mRNA splicing. The project aims to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms and splicing dysfunctions, establish robust mouse disease models, and develop targeted ASO therapeutics to restore normal gene expression.
Research Area
This role sits at the intersection of RNA biology, genetics, neurology, and translational therapeutics. The Krainer laboratory is internationally renowned for pioneering discoveries in RNA biology and alternative splicing, notably including the preclinical development of FDA-approved RNA-targeted therapies for human disease.
Job Description & Key Responsibilities
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for leading experimental workflows, analyzing complex datasets, and collaborating across disciplines. Specific duties include:
- Establishing and characterizing mouse disease models in collaboration with the CSHL Engineered Mouse Model Core Facility.
- Evaluating transcriptome perturbations using next-generation sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR, and quantitative PCR (qPCR).
- Characterizing mouse neurodevelopmental and behavioral phenotypes with guidance from behavioral neuroscientists.
- Investigating structure-function relationships using disease-causing missense mutations across biochemical and cell-based functional assays.
- Identifying key downstream alternative splicing or expression alterations and developing optimized antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) for therapeutic rescue.
- Interpreting scientific data and disseminating findings through high-impact publications, scientific conferences, and grant reports.
- Mentoring junior laboratory staff and actively participating in an interactive, collaborative research environment.
Eligibility & Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, RNA Biology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, or a closely related biomedical field.
- A proven track record of scientific productivity supported by peer-reviewed publications.
- Hands-on expertise in molecular biology techniques, including RNA analysis, gene-expression assays, and/or RNA-protein interaction studies.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and written/oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in RNA therapeutics, antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), and alternative splicing mechanisms.
- Practical experience working with and phenotyping mouse models of genetic disease.
- Proficiency with next-generation sequencing workflows and bioinformatic data analysis.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary for this postdoctoral position is $74,300.00 per annum. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory offers an exceptional benefits package, including comprehensive health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and access to world-class scientific meetings and courses.
