Research Area: Gut microbiota development during early life and its implications for metabolic health

Location: University of Amsterdam, Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields.
  • Experience in anaerobic culturing, genetic engineering, cell culture, organoids, or microphysiological systems is preferred.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will:

  • Explore the interactions among maternal factors, infant gut microbiota, and intestinal health to understand underlying mechanisms.
  • Utilize advanced technologies like the Gut on a chip physiomimetic GUMI platform and ‘omics’ analytical facilities to characterize metabolic function of infant gut microbes.
  • Investigate the influence of maternal factors on gut microbiota’s metabolic functions and their impact on gut epithelium and immune function in early life.
  • Identify key bacterial species, metabolites, or genes involved in mother-microbiota-infant interactions.
