Eligibility/Qualification:

  • PhD in microbiology, biochemistry, (bio)electrochemistry, analytical chemistry, imaging, systems biology, or related fields.
  • Experience with bio-electrochemical reactors, systems biological analysis, mass spectrometry, biofilms, or strain collection screening.
  • Proven publication record and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work in a diverse international team.

Job Description:
The Department of Microbial Biotechnology at UFZ is seeking six postdoctoral researchers for the BISON project. Responsibilities include:

  • Systems biological characterization of microbes in bio-electrochemical reactors using proteomics, metabolomics, and flux analysis.
  • Operation of pure culture bio-electrochemical reactors using mediators, with a focus on cyanobacterial cultivation and testing new electrode, membrane, or reactor designs.
  • Application of imaging and spectroscopy methods to visualize and measure mass and electron transfer in hydrogel-based artificial biofilms.
  • Cultivation and screening of cyanobacteria for electroactivity, biofilm-forming properties, and resistance to environmental fluctuations.
