The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) invites applications for the position of Project Research Scientist under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) supported project โ€œTranslation & Research for Advanced Nanoelectronics Growth (TaRANG)โ€. The selected candidate will work on advanced semiconductor fabrication technologies, particularly plasma and dry etching processes for nanoelectronics and MEMS device fabrication.

The position requires a Ph.D. in relevant fields with hands-on expertise in semiconductor fabrication, cleanroom operations, RIE/ICP-RIE systems, process development, optimization, and equipment management.

Eligibility / Qualification

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must possess:

  • Ph.D. in any of the following disciplines:
    • Nanotechnology
    • Electronics Engineering
    • Materials Science and Engineering
    • Semiconductor Technology
    • Physics
    • Microelectronics
    • Closely related disciplines

Required Experience

  • Minimum 6 months to 1 year of relevant post-Ph.D. experience in semiconductor fabrication.
  • Experience preferably in:
    • Semiconductor cleanroom environment
    • Research and development laboratories
    • Semiconductor process development activities

Required Technical Skills

Candidates should have hands-on expertise in:

  • Operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of plasma etching systems.
  • Reactive Ion Etching (RIE) and ICP-RIE systems.
  • Dry etching process development and recipe optimization.
  • Process qualification and standardization.
  • Plasma physics and gas chemistry.
  • Etch selectivity, anisotropy, uniformity, and process repeatability.
  • Semiconductor process characterization techniques:
    • Profilometry
    • Film thickness measurement
    • Microscopy
    • Electrical characterization methods
  • Semiconductor process integration involving:
    • Lithography
    • Deposition
    • Etching processes
  • Equipment qualification, calibration, preventive maintenance, and laboratory documentation.
  • Cleanroom protocols, chemical handling, and contamination control practices.

Desirable Skills and Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience in establishing baseline etching processes.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Process capability analysis and yield improvement experience.
  • Root-cause analysis and semiconductor process troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and technical documentation abilities.
  • Project coordination experience.

  • Technical ownership of etching process modules.
  • Ability to independently lead process development activities.

Job Description

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading operation, maintenance, qualification, and optimization of plasma and dry etching systems.
  • Developing, standardizing, and optimizing dry etching processes for semiconductor and MEMS fabrication.
  • Establishing baseline etching recipes and ensuring:
    • Process stability
    • Repeatability
    • Reproducibility
  • Troubleshooting equipment and process-related issues.
  • Implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Coordinating:
    • Preventive maintenance
    • Equipment calibration
    • Vendor support
    • System upgrades
  • Maintaining:
    • Process documentation
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Maintenance records
    • Equipment qualification reports
  • Ensuring compliance with:
    • Cleanroom procedures
    • Laboratory safety standards
    • Contamination control protocols
  • Providing technical training and guidance to equipment users.
  • Collaborating with other semiconductor process modules for integrated fabrication and R&D activities.

Salary Details

Pay Level: PR-O2

  • Salary Range: โ‚น42,000 โ€“ โ‚น84,000 per month
  • Additional Allowance: โ‚น7,500 Out of Campus Allowance (if applicable)
