Postdoctoral Scholar Position in University of Calgary, Canada

PhD Scholarship in Genomics:
A fully funded PhD position is available in the Yeaman Lab at the University of Calgary’s Department of Biological Sciences. This scholarship offers a tax-free stipend of $35,000 per year and provides an opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects involving the genomics of repeated adaptation and local adaptation in hybrid zones.

PhD Scholarship in Genomics of Repeated Adaptation

Designation:
PhD Student

Research Area:
Genomics, Evolutionary Biology, Bioinformatics, Data Analysis

Location:
Yeaman Lab, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Strong skills in bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Background in evolutionary biology, genetics, genomics, or a related field
  • Interest in developing new statistical methods or exploring theoretical evolutionary dynamics
  • Experience in field work is a plus but not required

Job Description:
The successful candidate will work on one of the following projects:

  1. The Genetic Basis of Repeated Adaptation:
  • Expand an existing dataset containing genome-scale data from 25 plant species.
  • Collaborate with researchers to extend the study to include insects, molluscs, fish, mammals, and other clades.
  • Utilize a range of methods to investigate genes driving repeated local and global adaptation, focusing on large-scale data analysis.
  1. The Genomics of Local Adaptation in a Spruce Hybrid Zone:
  • Investigate the hybrid zone between White and Engelmann spruce in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains.
  • Broaden the scale of sampling and sequencing along elevational transects.
  • Study phenological barriers to gene flow and conduct GWAS of phenotypic variation in common gardens.
  • Potential for field work or focus solely on bioinformatics/genomic analysis, depending on the candidate’s interests and experience.

How to Apply:
To apply, please send the following documents to samuel.yeaman@ucalgary.ca:

  • Your CV
  • A short description of your interest in the position
  • A summary of any relevant research experience
  • Names and contact information of three references

Last Date to Apply:
Applications will begin to be reviewed on October 10th, 2024. However, applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Samuel Yeaman if they need to make a quick decision.
