Swinburne University of Technology, Australia offers Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Department of Physics and Astronomy for 2 year fixed term contract in Quantum Gases topic. Eligible candidate completed PhD in the field of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics or Quantum Physics can apply.

About- Swinburne is a progressive university that aims to increase Australia’s capacity in science, technology and innovation as the drivers of modern, internationalised economies and workplaces. Our university is focused on high-impact global research, high-quality teaching and active engagement with both industry and the community.

About the Centre for Quantum and Optical Science-The Centre for Quantum and Optical Science (CQOS) is a large and dynamic centre, with currently 26 academic/research staff and 21 PhD students. Regular meetings (weekly group leaders meetings, weekly student talks, fortnightly seminars and journal club) engage members with the latest progress in our physics area. The theoretical physics group in CQOS, including Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science Prof. Drummond, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science Prof. Margaret, Fellow of the American Physical Society A/Prof. Hu, ARC Future Fellow Prof. Liu and ARC DECRA Fellow Dr.Wang, has an outstanding environment to conduct world-class research on ultracold atomic gases. It has the strong support from a world-leading experimental group that involves Prof. Peter Hannaford, Prof. Andrei Sidorov and ARC Future Fellow Prof. Chris Vale.

Research/Job area– Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics or Quantum Physics

Project Title- Quantum Gases

Location- Swinburne University of Technology, Australia

Eligibility/Qualification- To be successful in the role, you will have-

  • An earned doctoral qualification in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics or Quantum Physics
  • Solid theoretical background in ultracold quantum gases and condensed matter physics
  • Demonstrated strong English communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated publication track record in peer-reviewed journals

Job/Position Description- Two-dimensional exotic superfluidity in e.g., Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless quasi-condensates, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluids and high-Tc superconductors, is one of cornerstones of modern physics. Their observation and quantitative characterization are of fundamental importance for future quantum technologies. This research will provide a breakthrough understanding of universal exotic superfluidity in two dimensions and place Australia at the new frontier of quantum revolution.

This project aims to develop novel, more accurate methods to better characterise universal exotic superfluidity predicted to occur in ultracold fermionic atoms confined to move in two dimensions. Exotic superfluidity, flow without loss of kinetic energy in unconventional states of matter, exists universally in cold-atoms, condensed matter systems and neutron stars, and lies at the heart of some two-dimensional quantum materials. This project pave the way to quantitatively understand exotic superfluids, towards their ultimate observations at the experimental groups around the world, our research could be useful for emergent technologies based on exotic superfluidity.

As our postdoctoral research fellow, you will work on the project that develops novel and more accurate theory in strongly correlation Fermi gas system. With your strong theoretical skills and a solid background in ultracold quantum gases and condensed matter physics, this project is funded by the Australian Research Council, with Prof. Xia-Ji Liu. The research will be carried out at the Theory Group in the Centre for Quantum and Optical Science (CQOS). The position will be available on the full-time basis for up to two years.

In addition to your own research activities, you will be responsible for the supervision of postgraduate students working on the project, writing up results for publication and presenting results at conferences.
