Eligibility/Qualification–

Ph.D. degree in Embedded Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.  (Candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis or are awaiting defense are also encouraged to apply)

Technical Proficiency:

  • Good theoretical and practical foundation in embedded systems design and IoT fundamentals, including:
  • Microcontroller and microprocessor programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and firmware development
    • Sensor integration, signal acquisition, and preprocessing for diverse modalities (e.g., temperature, motion, audio, vision)
    • Communication protocols and networked systems: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, MQTT, and edge-to-cloud integration
    • Low-power and energy-efficient system design, power management, and embedded optimization techniques
    • Data acquisition, filtering, feature extraction, and real-time processing pipelines for embedded platforms
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with microcontrollers, embedded platforms, and IoT architectures, including integration of sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.
  • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning with practical, hands-on implementation, particularly for embedded and edge systems, including:
    • Design, training, and evaluation of ML/DL models for sensing, perception, and decision-making tasks
    • Model optimization techniques such as pruning, quantization, and compression for deployment on resource-constrained hardware
    • End-to-end implementation and deployment of AI/ML pipelines on embedded or edge platforms
  • Experience or exposure to programming and system development in C/C++, Python, and relevant hardware description or configuration languages.
  • Exposure to edge computing and embedded AI platforms (e.g., Jetson Nano, Raspberry Pi, ARMbased SoCs), including deployment and benchmarking of AI/ML models on constrained devices.
  • Knowledge of embedded optimization, real-time analytics, control strategies, and system-level codesign for robust and scalable IoT and cyber-physical systems.
  • Proficiency in handling sensor networks and large-scale IoT datasets, including data preprocessing, calibration, validation, and performance benchmarking.
  • Commitment to rigorous and reproducible research practices, including use of open-source toolchains, standardized evaluation protocols, and well-documented experimental workflows.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, integrate, and evaluate complete embedded and IoT systems, combining hardware, firmware, communication, and AI/ML components.

Research Excellence

  • Demonstrated research output through publications in reputable journals and peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts through scholarly writing, presentations, and interdisciplinary discussions.
  • Strong collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in team-oriented research environment.
  • In addition to pursuing independent research, the postdoctoral researcher will mentor graduate and undergraduate students, contribute to project supervision, and support collaborative publications within the research group

Co-ordinator: Prof. Babji Srinivasan, Department of Applied Mechanics & Biomedical Engineering.

Duration: Initially for six months, later extendable based on the performance.
