Doctoral Students in Advanced Characterisation/Modelling: KTH Royal Institute of Technology is inviting applications for two PhD students to participate in a groundbreaking research project focused on the advanced characterization and modelling of tungsten. This initiative is supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme and addresses the challenges in processing tungsten using cutting-edge additive manufacturing techniques.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • A Master’s degree in Materials Science or a related field.
  • Basic eligibility requirements as per Swedish Higher Education Ordinance:
  • Candidates must not have resided or conducted their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years preceding the recruitment date.
  • Completion of course requirements with at least:
  • 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 second-cycle credits.
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to English B/6.

Job Description

Microstructure Modelling

  • Develop thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of tungsten and its alloys.
  • Integrate results into microstructure models to predict phase transformations and grain structure during electron beam powder bed fusion.
  • Collaborate with experimental researchers to validate models.

Advanced Materials Characterisation

  • Characterise tungsten and its alloys at the atomic level using techniques such as atom probe tomography and electron-ion microscopy.
  • Focus on understanding the effects of trace and alloying elements on microstructure and properties.
