Research Area

The role is part of a T1D Grand Challenge research programme focused on developing innovative approaches to mimic the native in vivo islet microenvironment using stem cells for the therapy of diabetes. The work involves an interdisciplinary approach, combining stem cell culture, human tissue, bioengineering, computational analytical methods, and islet transplantation.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • PhD qualified in a relevant subject area (or near completion/submitted).
  • Background in developmental and cell biology, with expertise in cell culture (Human ES and/or iPS cells).
  • Web-lab skills, including molecular biology.
  • Expertise in imaging acquisition and analysis (confocal, multiphoton).
  • Bioinformatics skills, including experience in single-cell RNASeq analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills and a track record of publishing.
  • Ability to work independently, keep excellent records, and supervise others.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in pancreas and islet biology.
  • Expertise in bioengineering and biomaterials.
  • Experience with animal model transplantation.
  • Programming skills and competence in spatial transcriptomics/image analysis software.

Job Description

The successful candidate will lead efforts within the Spagnoli lab to mimic the key features of the native islet microenvironment. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments independently, collaborating across a multi-partner consortium, and helping to develop the research programme.

Note: Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis but are awaiting the award will be considered for appointment as a Research Assistant (Grade 5) until the PhD is confirmed, at which point the title becomes Research Associate (Grade 6).
