Research Assistant – Indian Participation in the CMS Experiment at CERN: Maintenance, Operation and Upgradation 2020–2025

Summary

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai invites applications for one Research Assistant position under the project “Indian participation in the CMS experiment at CERN: Maintenance, Operation and Upgradation 2020–2025.” The position is in the Department of High Energy Physics, under the supervision of Dr. Rajdeep Mohan Chatterjee and Dr. Shilpi Jain.

The selected candidate will work with particle detectors, assist in experiments and data collection, learn data analysis, and support equipment maintenance, including power supplies.

Eligibility / Qualification

Essential Qualification

Candidates should meet one of the following requirements:

  • Full-time Science Graduate from a recognized university/institute with at least 60% marks in:
    • Physics, and/or
    • Electronics.
  • OR full-time Diploma in Electronics Engineering / Electrical & Electronics Engineering / Electronics & Communication / Electronics & Telecommunication / Electronics & Telecommunication / Electronics & Telecommunication / Electronics & Communication / Computer Science (DETCS) from a recognized university/institute with at least 60% marks.
  • Knowledge of using personal computers and their applications.
  • Freshers as well as candidates with 1 or more years of experience in handling:
    • Electronics (digital/analogue)
    • Power supply
    • Control circuits
  • Experience in handling optical systems will be an added advantage.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of designing electronic circuits on PCBs.
  • Familiarity with VME/NIM electronics.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems for experiments.
  • Hands-on experience with optical devices such as:
    • Lasers
    • Photodetectors
    • Fiber optics
    • Oscilloscopes.

Age Limit

Maximum 25 years as on the closing date of application.

Job Description

The selected Research Assistant will be expected to:

  • Set up and operate experiments involving different kinds of particle detectors.
  • Collect experimental data.
  • Learn to analyze the collected data.
  • Assist in the maintenance of experimental equipment.
  • Work with equipment including power supplies.
  • Support activities related to the maintenance, operation and upgradation of systems associated with the CMS experiment at CERN.

Fellowship / Salary

The selected candidate will receive a monthly fellowship of ₹30,000.

The appointment is temporary and initially for one year, with the possibility of extension for a maximum period of two years, depending on performance. The appointment is also temporary and non-pensionable, and does not create any claim for permanent employment at TIFR.
