PhD Studentship: Tandem Catalysts for Selective Acidic CO₂ Electrolysis at University of Exeter, UK

Postdoctoral Position in UK United Kingdom

Summary

The University of Exeter is offering a fully funded, 3-year PhD studentship focused on the development of advanced Cu-based and tandem catalysts for selective acidic CO₂ electrolysis. This research aims to improve carbon utilisation and selectivity for multicarbon products like ethylene, contributing to sustainable chemical manufacturing.

Research Area

The research focuses on Electrocatalysis, Electrochemical Engineering, and Materials Science. Specifically, the project involves investigating catalyst composition, nanostructure, and spatial organisation to enhance the performance of acidic CO₂ electrolysers.

Location

Exeter, Devon, United Kingdom

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in electrochemistry, catalysis, or materials synthesis is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • The position is open to UK, EU, and International applicants.

Scholarship Description

Electrochemical CO₂ conversion offers a promising route to produce fuels and chemicals using renewable electricity. While acidic CO₂ electrolysis can improve carbon utilisation compared to alkaline systems, maintaining high selectivity and stability remains a challenge. This PhD project will:

  • Develop nanostructured Cu catalysts and tandem architectures.
  • Undertake catalyst synthesis and advanced materials characterisation.
  • Perform electrochemical testing using gas-diffusion electrode and flow-cell systems.
  • Evaluate performance in terms of reaction rate, product selectivity, and long-term stability.

The project is closely aligned with a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship led by Dr Mengnan Wang, providing an interdisciplinary environment with academic and industrial collaboration opportunities.

How to Apply

Candidates should apply through the University of Exeter’s application portal, referencing the project title and supervisor. The award covers full international tuition fees and provides an annual stipend.
