Research Associate in Synthetic Chemistry: The Department of Chemistry at the University of Manchester is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to join the Mills Group. The position is for a Leverhulme Trust-sponsored Postdoctoral Research Associate and involves conducting research in nonaqueous synthetic inorganic chemistry. The successful candidate will work on the project “Defining the Electronic Structures of (Hetero)Metallocene Anions – He-MAn” under the supervision of Prof. David Mills and Prof. Nicholas Chilton. The role involves synthesizing d-block complexes with aromatic ligands, characterizing their electronic structures, and exploring their reactivity profiles. Eligibility/Qualification:
- PhD qualification in organometallic chemistry or a closely related field (or expected to obtain soon)
- Experience in handling highly air sensitive compounds and expertise in Schlenk line and glove box techniques
- Proficiency in synthetic organometallic chemistry, including the synthesis of paramagnetic complexes
- Strong knowledge of d-block chemistry and cyclopentadienyl chemistry
- Experience in characterizing paramagnetic complexes and performing calculations (desirable)
- Ability to supervise other researchers and manage a group of PhD and project students
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Commitment to promoting equality and diversity in academia
Job Description:
- Prepare and fully characterize a series of organometallic complexes to a standard suitable for publication
- Supervise other researchers in the laboratory
- Conduct synthetic modification to facilitate the synthesis of thermally stable (hetero)metallocene complexes
- Analyze complexes using various techniques to establish their electronic structures
- Collaborate with team members and external collaborators
- Manage a group of PhD and project students
- Organize group meetings and present findings at international conferences
- Take a leading role in the research group, including laboratory management
