PhD Candidate – UP-RISE Project: We are seeking a highly motivated and academically accomplished PhD candidate for a joint position at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology. This position is part of the UP-RISE project, a Horizon Europe initiative aimed at enhancing food safety in African countries.

Research Area: Mycotoxin Occurrence and Fate in Traditional Fermented Products, Microbiological Food Quality Related to a Traditional Fermented Beverage
Location: University of Johannesburg (UJ), Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology
Eligibility/Qualification:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Biotechnology, Food Science, Food Technology, Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- Outstanding academic performance.
- Strong interest and hands-on/some experience in food safety, food microbiology, food composition, analytical techniques, and molecular biology.
- Proficiency in chromatography techniques (e.g., LC-MS/MS, gas chromatography), food composition analysis, food microbiology, and molecular biology.
- Ability to interpret data for the mentioned techniques.
- Desire to work in a multi-disciplinary, international, and intellectually challenging environment.
- Flexibility, responsibility, and the ability to work independently and in a team.
Responsibilities: As a PhD candidate, your responsibilities will include:
- Research focused on mycotoxin occurrence and fate in traditional fermented products and microbiological food quality related to a traditional fermented beverage.
- Fieldwork, including sampling.
- Laboratory work, including fungal isolation, mycotoxin analysis, microbiological analysis of fermented food, and testing the efficacy of fermentation on food quality and safety.
- Report writing, journal article publication, and meeting research output targets.
