Research Area
The primary research area centers on liver epidemiology, with a specific focus on:
- Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
- Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
- Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
Research operations will extensively utilize the ESPRESSO (Epidemiology Strengthened by histoPathology Reports in Sweden) cohort, a powerful database combining national healthcare registers with 8.3 million biopsy reports from 2.6 million individuals.

Eligibility / Qualification
Required Selection Criteria:
- Education: A PhD degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or an equivalent field. The degree requirement must be fulfilled at the latest by the time the employment decision is made.
- Technical Skills: Documented research experience post-PhD defense, including proficiency in statistical software such as R, SAS, STATA, SPSS, or equivalent programs.
- Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, alongside a proven track record of writing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles.
- Professional Attributes: Highly collegial team player with the ability to work independently, manage organizational responsibilities, successfully multitask, and solve complex, unexpected research problems.
Preferred Skills / Merits:
- Completion of a doctoral degree within the last three years is considered a strong advantage.
- Experience in register-based research, preferably in gastroenterology or hepatology.
- Experience working with linked routinely collected healthcare data.
- Holding a Medical Doctor (MD) degree is considered a merit.
Job Description
- Conduct Research: Perform high-level epidemiological research exploring the risk factors and prognosis of liver diseases where histopathology plays a core role.
- Data Analysis: Apply rigorous statistical and mathematical competencies to parse massive register-based health datasets.
- Collaboration & Knowledge Exchange: Actively participate in departmental, interdisciplinary, and international research forums at MEB.
- Academic Supervision: Engage in the co-supervision and guidance of PhD students within the research group.
