About- The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), a Deemed to be University u/s 3 of UGC Act, 1956 is a premier educational institution significantly contributing in the sphere of Human Resource Development for the Defence Forces by way of imparting education, research and training on Defence Technologies to the officers of Armed Forces, Scientists of the DRDO, Technical officers of the Ordnance Factory Board, Directorate of Quality Assurance, Defence Public Sector Undertakings and friendly foreign countries. The Institute is also active in carrying out result-oriented research as required for defence and national security.
Research/Job Area- Mechanical Engineering
The selected candidates will work on the DRDO-sponsored project:
“FEM based Design and Analysis of Railgun Structure”
Relevant research areas include:
- Finite Element Method (FEM)
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Railgun structure design and analysis
- Electromagnetic principles
- Electromagnetic-structural analysis
- Computational mechanics
- Mechanical design and structural analysis
- ANSYS/ABAQUS-based simulation
Candidates with demonstrated experience in ANSYS, ABAQUS or similar FE software using electromagnetic principle modules will be preferred.

Eligibility/Qualification–
For Research Associate-I (RA-I)
Essential Qualification:
- Ph.D. from a recognized university.
Desirable Qualification/Experience:
- Proven track record of using finite element software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.
- Experience with Electromagnetic Principle modules will be preferred.
Age Limit:
- Maximum 35 years as on the crucial date, 27 August 2026.
For Senior Research Fellow (SRF)
Essential Qualification:
- B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc. in First Division with NET/GATE, OR
- M.E./M.Tech. in First Division at both Graduate and Postgraduate levels.
- Minimum 2 years of research/teaching experience.
- Relevant industrial experience is mandatory for the SRF position.
Desirable Qualification/Experience:
- Proven experience with FE software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS, etc.
- Experience using Electromagnetic Principle modules will be preferred.
Age Limit:
- Maximum 32 years as on 27 August 2026.
Age Relaxation
- Up to 5 years for SC/ST, Women and PwBD candidates.
- Up to 3 years for OBC (NCL) candidates.
Job/Position Description-
The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, under the Department of Defence Research & Development, Ministry of Defence, Government of India, invites applications from eligible candidates for 01 Research Associate-I (RA-I) and 02 Senior Research Fellow (SRF) positions under a DRDO-sponsored research project titled “FEM based Design and Analysis of Railgun Structure.”
The positions are available in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and involve research in finite element modelling, structural analysis and electromagnetic principles. Selected candidates will receive a consolidated monthly stipend and may be encouraged to register for a Ph.D. at DIAT as per institute norms.

Selected candidates will work on the DRDO-sponsored research project concerning the finite-element-based design and analysis of railgun structures.
The work is expected to involve:
- Development and analysis of railgun structural models using FEM/FEA.
- Computational modelling and simulation of mechanical and electromagnetic effects.
- Use of simulation software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS or equivalent platforms.
- Application of electromagnetic principles in engineering analysis.
- Interpretation and documentation of simulation and research results.
- Supporting project-related research, technical reports and publications.
- Performing other research activities assigned by the Principal Investigator in connection with the project.
Candidates who are not found suitable for RA-I/SRF may be considered for a JRF position, subject to fulfillment of the applicable JRF eligibility criteria.
Additional Benefits & Conditions
- Medical facilities limited to MI Room facilities will be provided in addition to the monthly stipend.
- Fellows will be encouraged to register for a Ph.D. at DIAT through proper channels, subject to DIAT norms.
- The interview may be conducted in person or through video conferencing, depending on DIAT’s suitability.
- No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview.
- The selected candidate must join duty immediately upon receipt of the offer letter.
- Appointment to these positions is purely temporary and does not confer any right to permanent absorption in DIAT.
- The qualification and experience must have been obtained from recognized universities, institutions or industries.
